Opinion | Shall Traditions Return to Everyday Life

This is the current status. Traditional Chinese craft artisans hope to keep ‘tradition’ as a static aesthetic, while contemporary Chinese artists on the other hand, desire to be at the front to produce works that do not necessarily reproduce anything traditional. Both side are moving toward two extremes and a productive dialogue is almost impossible.

This is an article titled “Shall Traditions Return to Everyday Life” that I wrote for the UK-Chinese Times, published on April 13, 2018.

In the meantime, the Centre for Chinese Visual Art (Birmingham City University)’s 11th annual conference titled “Everyday Legend: Reinventing Traditions in Contemporary Chinese Art” is now open for registration.
